Matriculated as a medical student at Leiden 1747, and studied under Albinus, van Royen and Gaubius. In 1754 he accepted a professorship in Groningen for medicine, surgery and obstetrics. 'Together with Petrus Camper he was engaged in experiments in order to vaccinate the cattle against plague.'
