August Kappler (Mannheim 1815 - Stuttgart 1887) was one of the many German adventurers who landed inSuriname. Kappler spent a total of 43 years of his life in Suriname. In 1836 he arrived as a soldier in Suriname. He was stationed at various corners of the colony. That enabled him to see much of the country and study the people and nature. He regularly visited plantations and studied the customs and rituals of the slave population. Over his first six years he kept a diary that resulted in this publication..
