With the four beautiful coloured lithos. Contemporaine half leather binding. This book was published in 1854, just after after Tom's Cabin was published. Hoevell, a liberal MP, wrote this book when the abolition of slavery was discussed in the Dutch parlement. The baron writes in his book about the harsh treatment of slaves in Suriname. The MP claims that slavery does not belong in a country that claims to be Christian. Slavery he calls a "national sin" and in his book he gives the reader an impression of the terrible circumstances in which many slaves live.(extremely rare)
