Original decorated wrappers. Uncut. Unopened (except part 4). The “Société des Bibliophiles et Iconophiles de Belgique” was founded in 1910 under the impetus of Hector de Backer. Until World War II its successive presidents were Prince Louis de Ligne (in 1923 a separate publication on his “Bibliothèque du Chateau de Beloeil” was published by the Bureau des Annales Prince de Ligne), Hector de Backer (he authored the first publication “in-4°” of the “Société in 1924 -“L’Exercitium Super Pater Noster. Contribution à l’Histoire des Xylotypes”-, a splendid publication with 8 plates).and Jacques Willems (whose “Le Livre. L’Estampe. L’Édition en Brabant du XVe au XIXe Siècle” was also a publication for the Société). The complete series of the De Backer-auction-catalogue is really a monument of book collecting and bibliophily. The sale, at Drouot’s in Paris, was executed between February 1926 (1st part, 1st sale) and February 1928 (5th part). The 1st part of the collection (in all 2583 lots) was divided over 3 sales of respectively 601, 673 and 1307 lots. This part, with an introduction by Abel Lefranc, dealt with linguistics, rhetorics, poetics, chivalry novels and French authors from the 12th to the 20th centuries. Especially the older publications with extensive and excellent bibliographic descriptions. The 3d sale of this 1st part with 1307 lots fetched the astonishing sum of 444.597 Francs. This part with the errata-leaf for the first 3 sales. The 2nd part, march 28-31, 1927 and encompassing 651 lots (Nrs. 2584-3235) was on theology, sciences and arts, history, Almanachs, Flemish and Dutch authors, historical documents on Belgium, rich bindings of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. This volume contains 32 plates depicting truly wonderful bindings. The 651 lots fetched the astonishing amount of 942.080 Francs. The 3d part was held from 8 till 10 December 1927 and presented 562 lots (Nrs. 3236 – 3797) on illustrated books from the beginnings of the 19th century, the romantic period and from the 20th century as well as mosaic bindings. Total sum for the 667 lots of this part was altogether 582.511 Francs. The 4th part (held 8-13 November 1926) consisted of lots no. 1-667 on works by French, Flemish and Dutch authors, works on bibliography and books on Belgium and Flanders. This part with price annotations in pencil. The last auction was held on February 20, 1928. It contained the lots 668-903 and consisted of works on the arts, miniatures, bindings, drawings, engraved and lithographed prints, autograph letters from famous persons. This last sale of 236 lots fetched 203.598 Francs. All 7 volumes with their own indices. A fotocopy of the results of the 1st part 3d sale, 2nd part , 3d part and 5th part is also present.
