DSB III, 426 - 428: 'A long and remarkable study on diseases of the heart constituted his magnum opus and can legitimately be considered the first treatise on cardiology.': G&M 2737: 'Corvisart created cardiac symptomatology and made possible the differentiation between cardiac and pulmonary disorders. He was [the] first to explain heart failure mechanically and to describe the dyspnoea of effort. His translation of Auenbrugger's book on percussion ['Inventum novum ex percussione thoracis ...', 1761) resulted in the universal adoptation of that procedure. Corvisart was Napoleon's favourite physician. English translation, 1812, reproduced 1962.': Heirs of Hippocrates, 1126: 'In this great classic of cardiac literature, Corvisart for the first time so ordered the symptomatology of heart disease that differentiation between cardiac and pulmonary disease was made possible. He distinguished between cardiac hypertrophy and dilatation, he divided the clinical course of cardiac failure into three phases, and he showed the relationship between cause and effect in valvular disease and cardiac failure.': Waller, 2149: Wellcome II, 294: Norman Coll.
