Contemp. full vellum, covers some brown stains and discol. , but very good original quality. Title in ink on spine. [A-T12]. (452, III (index), I (blank) pp.). (Upper inner margin a vague waterst.; second half of the book idem to the righthand side, but more visibly so.). Dutch reimpression. Tchemerzine vol. II, p. 366: 'Il y a une réimpression hollandaise (suivant la copie impr. a Paris), 1681, Petit in -8 de 452 pp. et (2) ff. de table.': Graesse 502: "On recherche fort l'édition de Paris, 1681 in 12mo.": Brunet 1134 lists the [first and only] 4to ed. of 1681 and the [first] 12mo of 1682. Guide to hist. lit. C 44: "This is perhaps the last great literary expression of Christian epic". PMM, item 177: (Paris 1681) 'The 'Treatise on World History' is the last noteworthy exercise in that type of universal history which, beginning with St Augustien (3) interpreted the course of human history as a continuous manifestation of divine providence leading mankind towards salvation. Bossuet was the most famous court preacher of Louis XIV, ... he wrote the Discours for the instruction of the Dauphin, whose tutor he was from 1670 to 1679; ... can still be enjoyed as a noble specimen of classical French prose.': The first part discusses history from Adam to Charlemagne, the second part discusses religion (Judaism and Christianity) and the 3rd part describes the Scythian, Assyrian, Persian and Greek empires. Despite the waterstaining a good copy.
